The Films

Below is a selection of films from my portfolio. Each contains a unique love story, of two people (just like you) vowing to spend forever together. Each film is hand crafted to reflect who these couples are, and carefully assembled by me, in a way that solidifies the permanence of film. The way film is a cultural artifact, a way to remember our place in time. When we are gone, tiny fragments of our lives will remain, like the marriage licenses we filed, cozy together in some official cabinet. Your love story forever, on film.

What is the Difference Between Super 8 and 16mm Film?

I get this question the most. I wanted to provide some quick examples to help you discern which medium feels right for you. First, here are some visual examples:

What differences are you noticing? What do you like about each medium? What do you not like?

Pay attention to things like resolution, clarity, grain, color, light.

Here's how I like to differentiate the mediums:

16mm - The Thoughtful Artist

If you are someone who loves fine art, old films, novelty, lavish parties with a good theme... 16mm might be for you. I like to explain that the 16mm format was (and is!) used in actual cinema. Hollywood style. Movies like Moonrise Kingdom, Black Swan, The Evil Dead feature 16mm film. I usually recommend 16mm film to couples who I believe are looking for a unique look, but care about clarity and resolution. 16mm is a bit more clear than super 8, while still providing the filmic look.

The 16mm camera that I use is called a Krasnogorsk-3. It is a soviet camera that was created mainly as a news camera. It is nearly indestructible, ask me to hold one at a wedding! It is quite heavy. However, despite its obvious physical capabilities, the image that the camera captures is very beautiful. I also have a Bolex Reflex and definitely feel that the Krasnogorsk's image quality is superior.

Super 8mm - The Vintage Darling

Super 8 film is known for its incredible texture and color. Super 8 was invented as a way for anyone to be able to shoot video. Mostly used in the 60's and 70's a home movie camera, it introduced a new way for families or artists to capture moving film without spending thousands of dollars. Today, super 8 is definitely a means to express nostalgia, because it creates a beautiful life in every image. You can feel the energy from people through the lens. Dreamy and grainy, it evokes a real retro/vintage vibe. If you like dusty books, coffee dates, music from the 40's or campfires on a chilly night, super 8 might be for you.

I shoot on a Canon 814 Auto Zoom and adore it! I think the image quality is incredibly clear and I appreciate that the camera is completely manual, so I can adjust the light to fit the vibe I'm going for with my couple. I love shooting with this camera, although it's also a bit heavy, I find it to be very stable and reliable.
